Managing Your Child's Myopia Progression

Find practical advice, helpful resources, and management solutions to support their vision journey.

Learning that your child has myopia can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone.

Act Now!

By understanding myopia, encouraging healthy visual habits, and working closely with an Eye Care Professional, you can help support your child's vision journey with confidence.

When should my child have an eye examination?

Children may not always notice changes in their vision, making regular eye check-ups important. Schedule an appointment if your child:

Shows symptoms of myopia

Children may not always notice vision changes. These common signs can help you decide when to book an eye examination.

Has a family history of myopia

Children with myopic parents or siblings may be more likely to develop myopia themselves. Family history is one of the factors Eye Care Professionals consider when assessing a child's risk.

Is due for an eye examination

Even without noticeable symptoms, regular eye examinations matter. If your child has never had an eye examination, or it has been more than three years, don't wait for signs to appear before booking one.

What solutions are available to manage my child’s myopia progression?

If your child has myopia, your Eye Care Professional may recommend a management approach based on their age, lifestyle, prescription, and individual needs. Today, several myopia control solutions are available, including:

  • Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses

Specially designed spectacle lenses can provide clear vision while helping to control myopia progression. They are often a convenient and non-invasive solution for children and can be easily incorporated into everyday life.

  • Contact Lenses (Soft and Ortho-K)

Certain contact lens designs may be used as part of a myopia management plan for suitable children, depending on their age, needs, hygiene and ability to handle contact lenses responsibly.

  • Pharmaceutical Eye Drops

Low-dose eye drops may be prescribed by Eye Care Professionals in some markets as a myopia control solution. Availability, suitability, and prescribing practices vary by country and patient needs.

The good news? Myopia progression can be controlled, not only corrected.

While most spectacle lenses correct vision, they do not help manage myopia progression over time. That is why HOYA developed the evidence-based2 MiYOSMART* in 2018 and later introduced MiYOSMART iQ*, its next-generation spectacle lens solution, combining clear vision with myopia control.
